Personality Spotlight

Q & A :

Welcome to our Personality Spotlight, Pat! We're so honored to have the opportunity of getting to know you better. Please tell us about yourself.

Thank you for allowing my company, Essential Body Pleasures, to be part of the All Natural Beauty Mall.

My name is Pat White. I have lived in Phoenix, Arizona for the past 15 years. I am originally from Ste. Genevieve, Missouri; a small town south of St. Louis. My parents, brother, and sister-in-law still live there. Both families have wonderful farms and I love going back to see their beautiful gardens, cows, and just experience the country living. I have two daughters: Tiffany who is married to Patrick, they have 2 boys, Kaden and Shaun; and Aleshia who is married to Brett, and they have two children Darcie and Declan.

My husband, Scott, and I have 4 dogs that are very spoiled. I am a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and work with the Seriously Mentally Ill. I am currently pursuing my PhD in Mind-Body Medicine at Saybrook University. I have also taken aromatherapy certification classes through The East-West School for Herbal and Aromatic Studies and Aroma Apothecary Healing Arts Academy.

Who or what inspired you to go the natural way as well as start your line of products?

I became interested in essential oils about five years ago. The effects they have on the mind and body are amazing. When a person experiences chronic stress a myriad of hormones are released in the body. These hormones can lead to digestive problems, elevated blood pressure, eczema, and anxiety. Essential oils have a complex make-up and often one essential oil applied topically or via inhalation may decrease all of the above symptoms.

Lavender has up to 35% linalyl acetate. Linalyl acetate is effective at relieving inflammation and anxiety. Diffusing 2-3 drops of lavender at night can promote sleep and decrease anxiety. I find lavender my go-to oil. It is safe with children and pregnant women. I had a child as a patient who was afraid to go to sleep at night because she was afraid of monsters. I made a lavender spray and she sprayed it on her pillow before she went to sleep. This spray would help keep the monsters away and promote sleep. Next time she came to see me I asked her about the monsters. The monsters were all gone!

When I become interested in something I read everything I can find on the subject. I started reading on blending essential oils for therapeutic purposes. Two of my go to books are: Essential Oil Safety by Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young, and The Dynamics of Blending by Jade Shutes. Both of these books offer many research studies for people interested in the science behind essential oils. I regularly prescribe medications to treat a plethora of mental health conditions and found the addition of essential oils to be an excellent adjunct. As mentioned above, lavender is an essential oil I frequently recommend.

I found formulating body care products was the perfect way for me to combine my right and left brain. The science and creativity of formulating a blend is so exciting.

As I stated earlier, my area of specialization is mental health. I have learned through many years of education and experience just how important a healthy life style is on not just mental health but health in general. What we put in and on our body has long lasting implications. I wanted to share this knowledge with others and decided one way would be through incorporating essential oils into body care products.

Having experience in the medical field gives you great insight into the importance of using healthy beauty products. Please share your health background as well as your current work status with us, and explain how it works with what your company is all about.

Your company is called Essential Body Pleasures. Please explain what that name means to you and why you chose it to represent your lovely all-natural bath and beauty goodies.

I thought long and hard before I decided on Essential Body Pleasures. Just as important as the name of the company is the logo. It consists of the Yin-Yang symbol which is interdependent and continuously transforming one into the other. The Yin-Yang is infused with the colors of the chakras. The chakras are like spirals of energy, each one relating to the others. This truly represents my intention for Essential Body Pleasures, because our mental and physical health is interdependent.

What standards have you set for your company and products? Also, which are your favorite products within the line and why?

I make all of my soaps and body care products from scratch with only natural, fresh ingredients. I love experimenting and it was a challenge narrowing the product line. The all natural body scrub is a favorite of mine. Exfoliating is an important step in all skin care treatments. It helps rejuvenate the skin by exposing the smoother and supple layer of skin after removal of the dead skin layer. Our body scrub contains Himalayan salt which is quite different from salt found anywhere else. Himalayan salt, when left raw and in its natural state, is rich in nutrients and minerals. Since many of these elements found within each grain of salt naturally occur within us and in the environment, they are easily absorbed and utilized on a cellular level. Pink Himalayan Salt re-mineralizes the body with minerals and trace elements essential to our health and well-being. We also use Turbinado sugar. It is a sugar cane-based, minimally refined sugar. It’s often mistaken for traditional brown sugar because of its light brown color, but it’s made in a different way. Many people consider it to be healthier than both white and brown sugars, since it is generally less processed and refined.

People often ask me how I started making soap and where I make it. Soap is so much fun to make. It is the perfect complement for a science nerd who loves to create. I remember watching a video on soap-making and I thought it would be the ultimate goal but was scared to death. As long as a person uses appropriate safety gear and respects the lye, soap is safe and fun to make.

Finally, I have to talk about my All Natural Lotion. It contains sunflower oil, jojoba oil, and shea butter. But what makes this lotion so amazing is the organic herbal tincture. This tincture contains green tea extract, blue green algae extract, and oatstraw extract plus several other herbal extracts. This combination results in a blend of skin soothing ingredients..

Please share your experience with being a business owner. What have you learned along the way?

It has been quite a challenge trying to start a business while working and attending school. I am in the hamster wheel of having to work extra hours to be able to afford the wonderful ingredients for my products. I have to make sure I do not spread myself too thin. I have found I cannot do everything myself. I have tried and have experienced serious burnout. I would recommend starting with six products and refining these before expanding. I love the creativity side of having your own business. My favorite way to spend a weekend is in my kitchen with my apron on, watching home remodeling shows and making soap. Soap needs to sit for about 24 hours after it is made. I am constantly peeking at it to check the process. I have even got up in the middle of the night to check on my creations.

What would be your 'perfect day of pampering'?

What is my “perfect day of pampering’? I am so busy that I seldom have time to pamper myself. I have a place in the mountains where I can reconnect with nature. My day would have to be there looking at the mountains and watching the birds and squirrels. I would smell the fresh air with a blend of clary sage, lavender, and peppermint infusing the air. I would take a nice hot bath with my all natural body scrub, followed by the all-natural lotion. This would be followed by a facial and microdermabrasion.
