Product review by Sharon of all natural beauty
Totally impressed would be an understatement when referring to this album. If I didn't know the artist personally I still would enjoy it and listen to it often. But it just so happens that I have known Teporah (a.k.a. Deborah Bilezikian) for years through her magnificent cosmetic company, Monave Mineral Cosmetics. It was only quite recently that I even learned of her musical endeavors. After getting to know her new album, 'TEPORAH Bar Tunes', I am dumbfounded as to why Teporah is not a famous singer. I have no doubt that she will be.
'Bar Tunes' comes from years of playing around Baltimore in clubs. Being the busy owner of a cosmetic company would be a job in itself that would be too much for most people. But due to Debs unwavering passion for music, she's managed to lead a double life. When I saw that she had written every song but one on the album, I was amazed, yet not surprised. Her talent runs deep, as she sings, plays three instruments and co-produced this gem.
The musical genre of the album is jazz/blues. What I find brilliant about Teporah is her unique delivery. There's a sense that she's been through much heartache and come out the other side a vibrant, stronger woman. For anyone that feels heartache, she's there, understanding that pain and letting you know that you can get through it too. She shares a sense of vulnerability with us along with a feeling of compassion. Meanwhile her confidence shines through, nourishing your soul. Every song could be considered easy listening, never to be confused with sappiness. It's got heart and depth yet at times fun and lightness.
One of my favorites is 'Sweet Surrender', a deeply romantic and sensual song about a love that cannot be. It's timeless essence almost gives me a sense of floating. I could listen to this song over and over. Teporah's voice is angelic, making for a most beautiful song. 'Figure it Out' is another great example of her unique songwriting style. In this hip, smart number, Teporah calmly explains the ins and outs of love dynamics and how we can simply never really figure it out. It's just one of life's mysteries. One of Teporah's most poignant songs is 'Love Isn't Enough'. This seems to be the one closest to her heart as it is one of the most emotional songs on the album. It takes you on a journey as you realize along with her that you can love deeply yet realize that some relationships are just not meant to be. While there is great sadness in this song, it is also tempered with sweetness and strength. A deeply soulful song that I also enjoy is 'Tick Tock'. You can feel the relinquishing pain as the story tells of someone longing for a lover whose feelings have diminished. The electric guitar soulfully plays along with Teporah's awesome voice , making this another emotional yet enjoyable journey. The only song on the album not written by Teporah is the Gershwin classic, 'Summertime'. This is one of the most beautiful renditions I've ever heard. Teporah's bluesy, sultry voice creates a relaxed and sensuous feel to this timeless favorite.
You can purchase songs from this album from iTunes. But I know you will never regret purchasing the hardcover cd version straight from Deb herself. This album is a real treat for the listener. Her vocals are so rich and vibrant, and her emotions are straight from the heart. I am so proud to know Deb. I just hope that she remembers us little people when she reaches the big time. Because that's where she's headed!
Here's what Teporah has to say ~
Bar Tunes - Teporah
My name is Tepora in Armenian, Deborah in English. I have one foot in the modern world, and another in the world of ancient cultures, where music, art, and mysticism are primary forces in daily life.
It is said by some that beautiful music brings the angels near; a manifestation of the heavens. I try not to fit my writing into a mold, but rather, find my own voice and sound, while still crafting music that is worth listening to.
People often ask me what my influences are. Debussy, Eric Satie, Chopin, Joni Mitchell, Odetta, Joan Baez, Kate Bush, Brian Eno, Indonesian Gamelan, Armenian, and other Middle Eastern Music...the list goes on.
I hope you enjoy what you hear.
