A:

Dear  Julie Ann,

Silicones are used in hair care products to add shine and slip to the hair, making it easier to comb through, but over time these synthetic emollients can cause your hair to become lifeless, dry, brittle and dull. Most of them are not water-soluable, although there are gentler water-soluable ones to be found. The most common silcone, dimethicone, is a known tumor producer and can accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes. It is also non-biodegradable which is not eco-friendly.

That said, silicones are not the worst of ingredients to avoid. They are not on my "Top 10 Unwanted List". What I would recommend is trying a professionally pH'd balanced line of haircare products that are 100% healthy for your hair and recommended specifically for your hair type. When you use only ingredients that are healthy and beneficial, you will see a significant difference in your hair very quickly and will never again want to use silicone or any other "unwanted" ingredient.
